Probably the biggest mistake is not putting in the time and effort to make an informed decision when buying. You can buy a car and sell it in a couple of years if you don't like it. Real estate is more difficult to undo. Yes, you can sell it, but there are transaction costs.
An interesting fault the author finds is those who live at home with their parents because it's free and they want to blow their income on other things. For that, I blame the parents for letting it happen..
